LAWNS
We have continued with our mission to improve the lawns at TGS to provide a practical natural area for kids to run around and adults to sunbathe. In order to keep the grass looking at its best we cut, edge and water the grass at least once a week.
We also use organic feed to provide the nutrients needed to keep the lawn healthy. We do not use harsh herbicides on the lawn as the natural biodiversity is of great benefit to the Grain Store’s resident bees and insects.
Aerating Lawns
The reason that we aerate the lawns(this is perforating the ground with small holes) is to allow more air, water and nutrients to reach the root system which leads to a more healthy lawn and less likely for the lawn to flood. This is necessary as there has been work done around the garden that involved the use of heavy machinery like diggers which has compacted the lawn down. This means that while the lawn is meant to be 50% pore space and 50% solid to allow nutrients air and water it has been compacted and has affected the growth of the lawn.
Lawn compaction - due to the building work and heavy plant on the lawns there is compaction -
